I served on Snook from October, 1967 to
January, 1970. I had the jobs of DCA and 'A' Division Officer, Electrical
Officer, "IC' Division Officer, Diving Officer, and Operations Officer;
of course not all of them at the same time. I was a LT during that
period. My CO's were Ken Loposer and for a short period, Ted Hussey.
The XO's were Buster Bilyeau and Leo Wright. During my time on board,
we completed a refueling overhaul at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, moved
back to San Diego for about a year of post overhaul training and exercises
and then a 7 and 1/2 month deployment to WestPac. The deployment
included three spec ops, and some time in the Tonkin Gulf.
I retired from active duty in June, 2000, after 36 years, with the rank of Rear Admiral. My most important assignments were as CO of USS Ulysses S. Grant (SSBN-631 Blue), CO of USS City of Corpus Christi (SSN-705), COMSUBRON SIX, COMSUBLANT COS, COMSUBGRU TEN, and finally COMSUBPAC. After retirement and at the CNO's request, I came back as a government civilian in the Senior Executive Service (SES 5) and serve in the Pentagon as the Director of the Deep Submergence Branch and as Director of the Defense Liaison Division for the CNO.
